Hip-Hop pioneer Mos Def is opening a Gallery in New York

Hip-Hop pioneer Mos Def and advertising executive Free Richardson are opening a Gallery in New York.

Called “The Compound” the gallery will open in the South of Bronx and will be dedicated to Hip-Hop culture and visual arts.

Richardson and Bey chose the Bronx partly for its deep links to early hip-hop culture. Indeed, it’s in the Bronx that the Hip-Hop scene emerged in the mid-1970s. The first show, in mid-August, will be an exhibition of work by Jonathan Mannion, who has been photographing rap legends such as Jay-Z, Eminem, Busta Rhymes, and Nas since the 1990s.
