Designer Of The Day: Pierre Frey

Pierre Frey, eldest grandson to the man who founded the company that bears his name, in 1999 Pierre heard the calling to join the family business. Pierre’s first area of responsibility was the Middle East region (Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar…), followed by Southern Europe, the Asian markets, and finally France. Recognizing the huge growth potential yet to be realized, in 2007 Pierre joined PIERRE FREY Inc. Based in New York, he spent more than half his time traveling the US and Canada overseeing sales and business development for this vast market. He is now back in France since June 2011, as the head of Communication for the Group.

1/ Can you introduce yourself?
I am Pierre Frey, the grandson of the founder of Maison Pierre Frey. The house designs, creates and manufactures fabrics and wallpapers in the purest French tradition. I am the head of communications.

2/ How do you define design?
The word has been overused. To me, design is art with a function. Not just objects you look at, but objects you use; mirrors, lamps, sofas…

3/ Must design necessarily be functional?
Yes, otherwise it’s art.

4/ What do you dream of designing?
Technological fabrics. Maybe with integrated LED lamps, or that change according to the time of day, the people in the room.

5/ Your next project?
A collaboration with talented illustrator Ugo Gattoni, he is working on creating a fantasy world for a wallpaper series, and another collaboration with Inès de la Fressange. Two worlds that we haven’t explored yet.
